At the end of the living room of our #CastleStreet At the end of the living room of our #CastleStreetProject, we created an intimate space where our clients can sip cocktails or enjoy a casual meal. To keep it casual, we chose to use a 26” high table instead of the usual 30” height, and paired it with small scale lounge chairs. The low proportions of the furniture create a dramatic contrast against the tall bookshelves. Similarly, the deep peacock blue chair fabric stands out against the graphic quality of the bookshelves - which are populated with a personal collection of books, objects, and a few small pieces of art by the homeowner, artist John Goodman.

This chair from our #LakeStreetResidence project This chair from our #LakeStreetResidence project - in its understated simplicity - is the quiet star of the living room. The ebony-stained frame accentuates the graceful lines of the chair. There is an elegant contrast with the textural ecru fabric, but the emphasis remains on the form and delivers an effect similar to an artist’s line drawing.

Sometimes less is more when a chair already has lo Sometimes less is more when a chair already has loads of character. That was the case with this chair in our #LakeStreetResidence project. It had been residing in the living room for many years, alongside a secretary desk that had deep family roots. The desk received a paint refresh, along with a few structural repairs. But the worn paint on the chair frame speaks to its history and adds subtle layers of color and texture that we didn’t want to disturb. The silk upholstery and carefully applied passementerie were so skillfully executed that we decided to preserve the chair in the condition in which we found it.

This little barrel chair was one of a few pieces o This little barrel chair was one of a few pieces of furniture that our clients wanted to keep when they updated their #BerkeleyHillsResidence from top to bottom. In need of a little refresh, we had this beloved chair reupholstered in a bright, teal blue and used contrasting orange piping to accentuate the seams - a color that appears throughout the colorful home.

For seating around a classic tulip table at our #P For seating around a classic tulip table at our #ParksideResidence project, we selected Eames molded plastic chairs in four muted colors that complement a tangerine kitchen backsplash tile. The visual lightness of these chairs is ideal in such a cozy space. The soft forms make them non-directional, so they look great from any angle, and feels good for most human bodies.

At our #ParksideResidence project, we had the oppo At our #ParksideResidence project, we had the opportunity to revive a G Thams Danish chair and sofa that our clients had inherited from their parents. The pieces had good bones, great comfort, sentimental value, and introduced a grounding vibe that would make an interesting contrast with the large-scale Gothic window in the living room. So we were excited to have the pieces reupholstered, and we chose a faux leather for the sofa and a cozy graphic textural fabric by Kelly Wearstler for the chair.

For our fifth chair story, I was inspired to dig i For our fifth chair story, I was inspired to dig into the archives from my design school days and share the story of my foray into formed plywood. In my day, a furniture design-build studio was a required part of the interior design curriculum, and we were strongly encouraged to design and build a chair. Utilizing mostly inexpensive veneers and the vacuum form technique, I used restraint in form and expressed the innate beauty of the humble raw materials.
